Key symptoms for Sleep Apnoea investigation

The following symptoms should be investigated:
- Witnessed breathing pauses during sleep
- Gasping or choking at night
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Loud, habitual snoring, causing disruption at home (sleeping in another room)
Nighttime symptoms
(Increase suspicion of Mild, Moderate or Severe Sleep Apnoea)
- Waking unrefreshed, despite having what may be considered a good night’s sleep
- Frequent morning headaches
- Noted increase in poor concentration, often with some memory concerns
- Unexplained irritability or mood changes
- Dry mouth, often with a sore throat on waking
- Restless or fragmented sleep
- Nighttime unconscious tooth grinding, Bruxism, which often can present as morning headaches and increasing pain in temporomandibular joints
Clinical risk factors
- Raised blood pressure (hypertension)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular Disease
- Increasing weight associated with daytime tiredness
- Large neck circumference
- Atrial fibrillation or Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats)
